Patty and Bill's Excellent Alaska Adventure (Or What We Did On Our Summer Vacation) Tracy Arm Tracy Arm is a 25 mile long glacial valley. We spent the morning cruising among the spectacular scenery.
The water tended to be a bright blue-green, although quite murky to look into, due to the silt off the glacier. The photo below shows the bright color of the water compared to the gray rock of the hillsides.
This image is available for purchase. The waterfalls coming down the side of the fjords were all over the place, as you can see from the next two photos. The water would drop down several thousand feet of mountainside before hitting the water of the fjord.
A view out over the bow of the ship, as we travel down Tracy Arm.
At one point, Captain Mike brought the ship close to one of the fjord walls so we could all get a good look at the rocks.
One of the highlights of Tracy Arm is Sawyer Glacier. To give you an idea of the size of the glacier - the two little spots on the rock on the left are park rangers.
While we were at the glacier, one large piece calved (fell off) from the main part of the glacier. The estimate is that the falling piece is the height of a 20 story building.
To put this glacier in perspective, the dark blue ice (above and to the left of the splash of the calving iceberg) in the photo below extends roughly 200-250 feet above the surface of the water.
Not surprisingly, there were many icebergs in Tracy Arm. Here's one of the growlers.
We did see some wildlife in Tracy Arm, including this adorable harbor seal on one of the icebergs.
This image is available for purchase. People watching the glacier from the Spirit of Endeavour.
That afternoon, we cruised in Frederick Sound, looking for wildlife. Other Pages of Photos from our Cruise Ketchikan, Hyder, Petersburg, Frederick Sound, Sitka, Glacier Bay, Skagway and Haines
