Patty and Bill's Excellent Alaska Adventure (Or What We Did On Our Summer Vacation) Sitka Sitka is the oldest non-native settlement in Southeast Alaska. Originally settled by the Russians, Sitka was once known as the Paris of the Pacific. Sitka is located on Baranof Island. Here are some of the boats in the harbor at Sitka. The fog gives a nice moody feel to the photo.
And a private working lighthouse that is also a Bed and Breakfast Inn.
One of the highlights of our visit to Sitka was the wildlife. We saw several bald eagles while we were there. Here is a juvenile bald eagle on a branch on the ground.
And an adult posing on a post by the docks.
In addition to the eagles, we spotted a cute little squirrel, eating a small pinecone and watching the world go by.
Another highlight of our visit to Sitka was the Sitka National Historical Park, which has some fascinating exhibits on the Tlingit culture and several totem poles.
We even managed to get a photo of a yellow finch on one of the totem poles.
After a morning in Sitka, we cruised through the Olga, Neva and Peril Straits to reach Glacier Bay National Park.
