Patty and Bill's Excellent Alaska Adventure

(Or What We Did On Our Summer Vacation)

Frederick Sound

After cruising in Tracy Arm in the morning, our ship headed to Frederick Sound for an afternoon of cruising in hopes of seeing some humpback whales. We saw plenty of whales that afternoon, including several engaging in lunge feeding behaviors.  We got a number of lunge feeding shots - apparently we arrived during meal time. The ship did not seem to bother the whales - they spent quite a bit of time lunge feeding around the ship.

Here's a group of three feeding - a fourth is on it's way up to the surface.

At one point we saw one of the larger cruise ships go by while we were whale watching - the ship kept right on going by, and I'm not sure anyone even noticed that there were whales in the water.  Another advantage to being on a small ship.

The whales come up on their sides to feed when lunge feeding, and open their mouths like a huge scoop.  Here you can see the pectoral fin of the whale as it is lunge feeding on it's side.

Apparently, when you see the tail flukes, the whales are diving deep.  Here a mother and young humpback show their tails.

And of course, we had to get the flukes with some scenery in the background. . .

We don't have many people shots in this travelogue, but we couldn't resist this one of Enda demonstrating how to watch whales in style - with one of Gillian's Martinis (although with two of Gillian's Martinis, the whales will be watching you).

As with so many other locations in Alaska's Inner Passage, the surrounding scenery was gorgeous. When the sun breaks through a bit the low clouds against the landscape really are magnificent.

After cruising Tracy Arm and Frederick Sound for a day, our next stop was Sitka.
